Behind Coachella

Oorsprong Coachella, volledig bekend als het 'Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival,' of kortweg Coachella Festival, is een jaarlijks muziek- en kunstfestival dat gehouden wordt op de Empire Polo Club in Indio, Californië. Deze plek staat nu bekend als de Coachella Valley in de Colorado Desert.

Het festival wordt georganiseerd door Goldenvoice, een dochteronderneming van AEG Presents (Anschutz Entertainment Group - een Amerikaanse wereldwijde presentator van sport- en muziekentertainment).

Muziek Het evenement biedt een verscheidenheid aan muzikale artiesten uit verschillende genres, waaronder rock, pop, indie, hiphop en EDM (elektronische dansmuziek).

In de beginjaren bestond de kunst voornamelijk uit gerecyclede stukken van het voorgaande jaar op het Burning Man-festival, vanwege een kleiner budget. Tussen 2010 en 2015 verschoof Goldenvoice zijn focus van het huren van stukken naar het specifiek laten maken ervan voor het festival, waardoor hun budget werd verhoogd. Vanwege de kosten van herassemblage verschijnt slechts ongeveer de helft van de kunst opnieuw buiten Coachella.

Boycot Het begon als een evenement terug in 1993 waar Pearl Jam optrad bij de Empire Polo Club en boycotlocaties die werden gecontroleerd door Ticketmaster. Deze locatie werd gekozen omdat de band weigerde op te treden in Los Angeles als gevolg van een geschil met Ticketmaster over servicekosten die werden toegepast bij de aankoop van tickets.

Inaugureel evenement Deze show markeerde het begin van een levensvatbare locatie voor het organiseren van grote evenementen, wat leidde tot de inauguratie van het Coachella Festival dat over een periode van twee dagen werd gehouden in oktober 1999, drie maanden na het beruchte Woodstock '99.

En vanaf daar werd geschiedenis geschreven en werd Coachella waar het vandaag de dag bekend om staat.

Doel Hoewel het Coachella-evenement begon als een boycot, is het tegenwoordig een groot evenement waar populaire en gevestigde muzikale artiesten, evenals opkomende artiesten en herenigde groepen, worden gepresenteerd.

Art

But it is not limited to their musical performances, it also displays art installations and sculptures captivating attendees. Many of these pieces are interactive, offering a captivating visual experience. Over the years, the festival's art installations have evolved dramatically in scale and creativity. Initially, constrained by budgetary limitations, early installations often comprised recycled pieces from the preceding year's Burning Man festival. However, between 2010 and 2015, Goldenvoice redirected its efforts towards commissioning bespoke artworks for Coachella, significantly amplifying the festival's artistic landscape. Due to the expense of reassembly, only around half of these artworks are re-exhibited beyond Coachella's grounds.

Boycott

The festival's origins trace back to 1993 when Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club while boycotting Ticketmaster-controlled venues. The site was chosen as an alternative to Los Angeles venues due to a dispute with Ticketmaster over service charges applied to ticket sales.
